Global Field Entry #2
One cultural tradition of the French is the cuisine, with mealtime and added snacks I will explore deeper into this journal, and meals in France are meant to be savored. The traditional French meals are distinguished by wines, cheeses, breads, and sauces. But that doesn't include an apéro, an apéro is a common French pre-dinner ritual that brings people together over light snacks and unwinding into light yet heartfelt conversations. The apéro could be before lunch (mostly on the weekends but not all the time) or dinner, now you could indulge yourself in the French apéro dinatoire which are filled with more food and is more of a relaxed French dinner party. Another sweet snack that are apart of traditions in France is the Galette des Rois, or The King Cake, the tradition with The King Cake is the celebration of Epiphany on January 6th. This sweet pastry can is the star of family, friend and even sometimes work events, with an almond cream filling and a paper crown on top, cutting into the cake to find the small trinket hidden inside. and the last sweet or savory snack that is a part of French tradition is the crêpe, the thin pancake (unlike Americas pancake, the crêpe is made from unleavened dough or batter) are often served with a variety of toppings from sweet to savory to salty. The snack is also linked to another French celebration called Chandeleur, the crêpe filled holiday is celebrated every year on February 2nd and is better known as Candlemas. La Chandeleur gets its roots in both the Pagon and Christian traditions. Before it was celebrated in Christianity, in Celtic traditions La Chandeleur brought the signs of spring. When Christianity was at a rise, Chandeleur became Candlemas, a banquet recalling the presentation of Jesus, 40 days after his birth, candles being blessed in churches to represent light. The holiday also comes with some folklore that if you flip a crêpe with one hand and hold a gold coin in another, you will guarantee prosperity in the coming year. All of these foods/snacks and their meaning/traditions can be taught at home by parents, done around friends and family, or could be taught in school as well. All foods recipes and traditions can be taught and passed down family and friend traditions. In comparison to myself and my life, most of my meals revolve around cheeses and breads, but I cannot speak for all of America, I do know that we as Americans have much larger portions sizes in food in comparison to the French.
